Mother's Day at Six by Nico

I have been excited about the opening of the new restaurant Six by Nico for absolute ages so as soon as they were taking bookings I just had to! Seeing there was tables free on Mother’s Day I thought ‘who better to share this amazing culinary experience with than my mum?’ Within minutes it was booked and I was swiftly on the phone to tell her the plans. I know you are all thinking it so I will just come out and say it-yes, I am the world’s best daughter!
The premise behind Six by Nico is 6 dining concepts running for 6 weeks each of which a 6 course tasting menu is on offer. The first of which is ‘The Chippie’-6 courses showcasing the brilliance that is the humble British Chip Shop. Of course the food isn’t quite as simple as that, each dish masterfully reimagines chip shop classics and raises them to unbelievable levels in appearance and flavour.

Chips & Cheese
Crisp potato with crowdie mousse topped with a smoky crumb…all served in an espresso cup
Scampi
Deepfried monkfish cheek, squid ink sponge, fennel and a Japanese jus made with tuna
Steak Pie
Speyside beef shin slow cooked for 48hours, onion and croutons
Special Fish
Shetland cod with sea vegetables, picked, mussel, fennel emulsion and crispy bits
Smoked Sausage
Ayrshire pork with black pudding, pork shoulder, apple and celeriac-this comes to the table with an extra surprise!
Deep Fried Mars Bar
Salted caramel, aerated chocolate, malt parfait and lime jelly –the only deep fried mars bar I have ever had

The food was absolutely gorgeous! If I was to pick a favourite it would have to be the scampi as I could have drank an entire cup of the Japanese jus. The 6 course tasting menu costs £25, vegetarian option available, and is worth every single penny and more. Best food I have ever tasted. There is also an option for wine pairing but I opted for the aperitif which is was G & T of Edinburgh gin with samphire and grapefruit. I was hardly going to turn that down!

We ended the meal with tea and coffee. My mum asked for a mint tea but the waiter told us they had ran out so he made a fresh tea using mint leaves from the kitchen. I thought this made the night even more special as not many places would do this.

My mum has already said she will be taking me back for my birthday and I cannot wait! The concept will have changed by then too! I wonder what the next one will be!?

Have you had a dining experience similar to this?
